Paeonia lactiflora, 'Purple Goose Flying in the Frost' Chinese herbaceous peony
Name in Chinese and pin yin: 紫雁飛霜 Zi Yan Fei Shuang
Notable characteristics: The spicy, sweet fragrance of this gorgeous peony makes it a must for any garden. We also love its poetic name! This is a difficult flower to photograph and finally we have a great photo of it shown here. The deep reddish-purple petals will get a frosted look with lighter tips as the flowers age; hence the name. Strong grower.
Species, place of origin: Paeonia lactiflora, Luoyang city, Henan province, China.
Growth habit and size at maturity: Grows to 3.5' tall and wide. Large leaves. Needs support.
Flower form and size: Well-formed double blossoms, 5".
Flower fragrance: Strong scent, very fragrant perfume.
Bloom time: Mid-season herbaceous peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-8.
Plant size: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots.
